Summary

The eagerly anticipated second essay collection from Jessi Klein, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestselling debut You'll Grow Out of It。

"Sometimes I think about how much bad news there is to tell my kid, the endlessly long, looping CVS receipt scroll of truly terrible things that have happened, and I want to get under the bed and never come out。 How do we tell them about all this? Can we just play Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire and then brace for questions? The first of which should be, how is this a song that played on the radio?"

In New York Times bestselling author and Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Jessi Klein's second collection, she hilariously explodes the cultural myths and impossible expectations around motherhood and explore the humiliations, poignancies, and possibilities of midlife。

In interconnected essays like "Listening to Beyonc in the Parking Lot of Party City," "Your Husband Will Remarry Five Minutes After You Die," "Eulogy for My Feet," and "An Open Love Letter to Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent," Klein explores this stage of life in all its cruel ironies, joyous moments, and bittersweetness。

Written with Klein's signature candor and humanity, I'll Show Myself Out is an incisive, moving, and often uproarious collection。

I absolutely adored Jessi's first collection of essays and, upon reading her "Open Love Letter to Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent," found my crush on her renewed。 Excited for this, which I think I'm going to have to listen to on audio! A joyous collection of short essays that will make you nod your head in recognition and, often, laugh out loud。 Klein has put into words thoughts I suspect many of us have had about the joys and frustrations of life。 Although most of her commentary is about parenthood and dealing with young children, there's something universal here。 While it's pointed in spots (the jewelry!) it's also filled with admiration for others and an underlying sense of community and love。 Thanks to Edelweiss for the AR A joyous collection of short essays that will make you nod your head in recognition and, often, laugh out loud。 Klein has put into words thoughts I suspect many of us have had about the joys and frustrations of life。 Although most of her commentary is about parenthood and dealing with young children, there's something universal here。 While it's pointed in spots (the jewelry!) it's also filled with admiration for others and an underlying sense of community and love。 Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC。 She's a hoot。 。。。more

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this since it was a giveaway win and I’d never heard of this author before, but this was honest, at times painfully relatable, and at times quite funny。 Not the best memoir I’ve ever read, no…but truthful and very enjoyable。 I do think I’d like to read her first book now, to see how it compares to this one。 Overall, I liked it。

Required reading for all parents。 Jessi dares to say the things we’ve all felt raising kids。 This book makes me feel less alone as a mother。 I loved it and I can’t wait to share the book with my parent-friends。

I'm bummed that I didn't vibe more with this essay collection, especially since I LOVED You'll Grow Out of It so, so much。 These essays are all about motherhood, growing older, trials and tribulations of having a young kid, and a couple of pop culture commentaries relevant for kids of the 1970s。 I don't really fall into any of these demographics - so I unsurprisingly was not able to relate to most of the stories here。 Jessi Klein frames all of these essays - and the general saga of being a mothe I'm bummed that I didn't vibe more with this essay collection, especially since I LOVED You'll Grow Out of It so, so much。 These essays are all about motherhood, growing older, trials and tribulations of having a young kid, and a couple of pop culture commentaries relevant for kids of the 1970s。 I don't really fall into any of these demographics - so I unsurprisingly was not able to relate to most of the stories here。 Jessi Klein frames all of these essays - and the general saga of being a mother - through the lens of the Hero's Journey, from the refusal of the call (her son refusing to go to the bathroom in an actual toilet) to the series of trials (every day, trying to get her son to go into a carseat)。 There are also other topics on the idiosyncrasies of motherhood, such as "mom clothes" and the proliferation of jewelry for moms with their childrens' names/initials engraved on them。 I'll hold off on any criticism of Jessi because I haven't experienced 90% of the things she writes about in this book - so criticizing her doesn't really seem fair。 Her writing is very funny, just as it was in her first book。 (In particular, I loved the story about Buster the caterpillar/butterfly。) I'm sure that anyone who likes funny essays about motherhood and midlife - just like it advertises in the title! - will enjoy this book。 。。。more

Literally cannot say enough good things about this book。 Jessi Klein is a national treasure and patron saint of real-talk moms。 Whether extolling the blessing of a certain kind of jumpsuit, questioning the proliferation of “mama” necklaces or being honest about what happens inside your head when your reading a book for your kid for the 1000th time, Klein will have you screaming “omg yes!” And if you grew up in the 70s/80s, you’re really in for a treat。 But Klein also writes with beautiful and he Literally cannot say enough good things about this book。 Jessi Klein is a national treasure and patron saint of real-talk moms。 Whether extolling the blessing of a certain kind of jumpsuit, questioning the proliferation of “mama” necklaces or being honest about what happens inside your head when your reading a book for your kid for the 1000th time, Klein will have you screaming “omg yes!” And if you grew up in the 70s/80s, you’re really in for a treat。 But Klein also writes with beautiful and heartbreaking sensitivity about the painful and bittersweet parts of raising a child and raising yourself。 Basically you will laugh, you will cry and you will laugh again。 You may also toy with the idea of kidnapping Jessi Klein and making her your best friend 🤷🏻‍♀️ 。。。more
